Baden Hall Fishery
1 / 4About
The Quarry is a mature 12-acre gravel pit and the undisputed flagship water at Baden Hall Fishery, designed exclusively for the serious specimen angler. With 18 individually spaced swims, each complete with its own cabin, the lake offers a comfortable yet focused setup that is ideal for extended sessions. Each cabin is spacious enough for a large bedchair and full tackle setup, and comes with a landing net, cradle and weigh sling supplied on the peg — personal equipment must not be used for bio-security reasons. No bivvies are permitted on The Quarry. Peg draw takes place at 10:30am on arrival day. No bait boats are permitted on this water. Strictly 18 and over, no guests allowed under any circumstances. The Quarry holds an impressive stock of approximately 120 carp, with weights ranging from a solid 20lb through to a staggering 50lb-plus, and a current lake record of 52lb 8oz. During the dedicated three-rod season from November to February, anglers can also target the resident pike, which reach weights of 25lb-plus using dead bait, lures and drop shotting — a thrilling additional challenge during the colder months. The lake features a weedy and silty profile with significant depth variations throughout, and rewards anglers who invest time in watercraft, careful feature finding and precise bait presentation above all else. Weed growth is prevalent year-round on The Quarry, making bait presentation absolutely critical. Rather than targeting extensive clear areas, experienced anglers focus on the edges of weed beds where fish are often actively feeding on natural food sources. A marker rod is essential for reading the lakebed — a sharp drop indicates harder ground which is less silty and ideal for a more direct presentation. Adjustable rigs that hover above the silt and weed are consistently effective, keeping bait visible and in the feeding zone without burying into the bottom. Stealth and timing are equally important on this water. Quarry carp regularly reveal themselves at specific times of day, particularly around dawn and dusk, and maintaining a low profile with minimal disturbance during these windows can make all the difference. On warm days, do not underestimate the potential of fishing close in or at the surface — shallow areas near the bank can be especially productive with floating baits when fish are active in the upper layers. Proven bait choices include rich, attractively scented boilies, pellets and pop-ups to ensure visibility above silt, and zig baits which are particularly effective in spring and early summer when fish are holding mid-water. In colder months, fewer but higher-quality boilies tend to outperform heavy baiting strategies, while in warmer seasons, smaller but more frequent introductions help maintain fish interest over your chosen spot. Rig selection should be tailored to the season — chod rigs for weedy conditions, ronnie rigs for versatility over silt and mixed terrain, stiff hinge rigs for big wary fish, and PVA bags for concentrated bait zones. Surface rigs with bolt controllers are highly effective during warm weather when fish are active near the surface.
