The Big Pit was formed by combining the original Old Canal and Old Pit lakes into one large and complex water. It is a deep venue with depths reaching 18 feet at the inlet end and around 8 feet at the shallow outlet end, with a predominantly silty bottom over a base of peat and clay. Multiple islands and varied features make it well suited to a range of tactics, from the pole for smaller fish through to ledger, method feeder and boilie presentations for the carp, which run to 28lb. The lake holds a diverse stock including carp to 28lb, large tench, specimen perch, bream and roach. It caters to both the casual pleasure angler and the more experienced specimen hunter, and is fished by many of the regular specimen anglers at White Springs who regard it as a challenging and rewarding water in its own right. The unusual depth profile and variety of features mean no two sessions fish the same, and ledgering and method feeding are particularly productive given the deeper water. Swims are accessible via gravel paths with car parking directly adjacent. Lakeside cabins with electricity, microwave and fridge are available for hire on the Big Pit. Bait boats are permitted. A maximum of 2 rods per angler applies. No braided mainline; coated hook lengths are allowed. Barbless or micro-barbed hooks to a maximum size 8. Pellets and boilies only — no mixed particles, tiger nuts or sweetcorn. Keep nets are not permitted without management permission.
