The Specimen Lake is a 9.5-acre mature water and the flagship lake at White Springs, set among islands, gravel bars, lily beds and weed patches with depths ranging from 2 to over 8 feet. Fed by natural spring water, it provides exceptional oxygen levels and fishes well throughout the year, including winter when many other venues struggle. The lake holds a large head of carp into the upper twenties and thirties, with fish exceeding 40lb present — the current records stand at Mirror Carp 45.2lb, Common Carp 43.8lb and Grass Carp 32lb. Named fish such as Hobnob are well known on the venue, though many of the larger residents remain uncaught. The lake is not suitable for beginners and requires anglers to be correctly equipped before fishing. A minimum 42-inch landing net is required, along with an adequate high-walled cradle or mat capable of holding water — flat or beanie mats are not permitted. Micro-barbed hooks only to a maximum size 2, no braided mainline, and lead core leaders are permitted to a maximum of 1 metre. Bait boats are allowed. Only pellets and boilies are permitted — no mixed particles, tiger nuts or sweetcorn. Three rods are allowed per angler. Swims are a mix of single and double pegs, with car parking directly adjacent to the majority. Several pegs have lakeside cabins available for hire, each equipped with electricity, fridge, kettle and microwave. The open water, margins and gravel bars all produce fish, and bailiffs are on hand to advise on features and tactics. A little and often approach with well-presented boilies works consistently well. The lake is also available for matches, charity events and advance group bookings.
